It was a remarkable day in the history of African football as the Confederation of African Football (CAF), awarded a well deserved 3 points and 3 goals to Super Eagles of Nigeria who were held hostage by Libyan authorities a few days to the second leg of Afcon qualifier between the two African nations.
The African Soccer Lord did not only award 3 points to Super Eagles of Nigeria, it also asked Libya to pay a fine of $50,000 for breaching Article 31 of AFCON regulations.
According to CAF Media, the following decisions were taken by Continental Soccer Lord:
- The Libya Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
- The match No.87 Libya v. Nigeria of the CAF African Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled to be played on 15 October 2024 in Benghazi) is declared lost by forfeit by Libya (by a score of 3-0).
3 The Libya Football Federation is ordered to pay a fine of USD 50,000.
- The fine is to be paid within 60 days of notification of the present decision.
- All other and further motions or prayers for relief are dismissed.
Following the decision of CAF, it is important to note that, the Super Eagles of Nigeria has gathered 10 points with two games at hand, and has automatically qualified for 2025 AFCON slated to be played in Morocco. This will now give the team the chance to have a concentration on their remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches where the team performance is not really commendable at this period.
