Oyo: Muslim Community Postpones Independent Shari’a Arbitration Panel’s Inauguration

The Muslim Community of Oyo town has announced the postponement of the inauguration ceremony of the Independent Shari’a Arbitration Panel, initially scheduled for January 11, 2025. The event was to take place at the Oyo Muslim Community Islamic Centre, Agbogangan, Oyo.
According to Dr. Bello Rafiu Adisa, Chairman of the Committee, the postponement was necessary due to the misrepresentation of the programme as the inauguration of a Shari’a Court, rather than an Independent Shari’a Arbitration Panel. The panel aims to settle family disputes among willing Muslims, without any power of enforcement, and is not a court.
Press statement.
Suspension! Suspension!! Suspension!!!
This is to inform the general public on behalf of the entire Muslim
Community of Oyo town that the inauguration ceremony of the INDEPENDENT SHARI’A ARBITRATION PANEL of Oyo town, initially slated for the 11th of January, 2025, at the Oyo Muslim Community Islamic Centre, Agbogangan, Oyo, has been postponed, and a new date will be announced later.
The postponement is informed by the inadvertent reference of the programme as the inauguration ceremony of the SHARI’A COURT in Oyo town and its environs instead of the INDEPENDENT SHARI’A ARBITRATION PANEL.
Such an arbitration panel, which already exists in many parts of the Southwest, is only meant to settle family disputes among willing Muslims, without any power of enforcement. It is not a court.
Thanks.
All inconveniences caused by the misrepresentation and consequential postponement are highly regretted.
Dr. Bello Rafiu Adisa
Chairman of the Committee.
